Soling helm Neville Wittey is the sailing equivalent of a cradle snatcher.
In 1990, when he was head coach of the junior sailing program at the Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron, he decided to do some talent spotting.
Wittey picked David Edwards and Joshua Grace out of the scores of youngsters who came through the program and they have been a trio in the Soling class ever since.
Throughout the decade theye been together, Wittey, Edwards and Grace have enjoyed some success in the Soling, particularly in match racing.
In 1997 they won the Soling Match Racing World Championships. It was their third World Championship title together, having won the world title in 1995 and 1996 (Soling class).
As you would expect, Wittey is vastly more experienced than his two proteges.
He began to sail before he could walk, and has made yachting his life.
In 1995 he was part of the Louis Vuitton Cup on Sydney 95 and he was also part of the Americas Cup Challenger Series in the same year.
Wittey is an accredited international judge and umpire, a significant achievement.
When he is not sailing he enjoys paddling, rollerblading, walking and horseriding. He is married to Portia with one daughter.
Grace began sailing when he was 15. Off the water, has a degree in marketing and finance but is a fulltime sailor at present.
His interests include painting, tennis, snow skiing and art galleries.
