Rich clothes for rich folks
Paris fashion shows frequently inspire a sense of wonder in the watcher, as in wondering who could possibly wear the clothes on parade.
But to see the Yves Saint Laurent show on Monday night and witness Mick Jagger's ex, Bianca, lounging on one of the black satin frontrow sofas in a floorlength chiffon kaftan gown from a previous collection was to understand who: the bold, the beautiful and the bloody rich.
This show did not have the amazing energy and excitement of Tom Ford's past three collections for the house, but with five now notched up, slackening the pace a little on this one did not seem like a huge problem.
Ford has more than proved himself up to the job, and the label's image has been transformed from musty to musthave.
At least half of this collection was terrific. The best bits were high1980s in feel, complete with the brazen return of the shoulder pad, and when Tom Ford says we will wear linebacker jackets again, you can be sure we will.
These were cropped to just above the hip, with sharp lapels, cinched waists and just a little historic detailing to continue his ongoing theme in an epaulette or a quilted stomacher. The trousers, like many on the catwalks this season, were in the style of those made famous by Olivia NewtonJohn in Grease pythontight on the leg, high in the waist and a terrifying prospect to most women. The best ones were black with a satin stripe down the leg and, combined with the jacket above, created the latest version of the Saint Laurent classic le Smoking.
After a week that has been dominated by wildly creative British designers, Monday was the turn of the American stars, with Marc Jacobs showing his latest for Louis Vuitton.
It was clear from the enormous dirigibles of the company logo floating outside the venue that Jacobs was in a playful mood.
It made a pleasant change to see a collection made for summer rather than the general urban gloom that prevailed elsewhere. The show opened with 12 or so models wearing the same style of short satin dress, all in a palette of pretty colours, including pistachio green, primrose, baby pink and forgetmenot blue. They looked like a bowl of shiny, sugared almonds.
There was a strong 1950s feel to the collection, particularly in the suiting, and the Grease pants were also in evidence. The finale was a perverse twist on the opening, with a suite of pretty shift dresses in the same pastel tones,[url=http://nikefree.mobilejeti.com]nike free[/url], except these were made of pervy latex.
