John Amos Snuffed
Several hours before the BET Awards got underway in Los Angeles last night, Najee Ali, his group Project Islamic HOPE and a coalition of black fathers held a press conference outside of event's venue to protest the show's removal of John Amos as a presenter because he was "too old." Amos' old "Good Times" costars Jimmy Walker Jr., Bernadette Stanis and Ralph Carter were among the talent scheduled to appear during the ceremony. But according to Ali, the ceremony's talent executive, Deborah Byrd,Louis Vuitton, cut Amos from the lineup because of his age. "Why?" Ali asked in a statement.
"John Amos is the first African American to represent a positive role model in a CBS sitcom during a time when it wasn't done before. He broke the image in across America in African American households nationwide and he left the show when the network wanted to compromised the positive moral integrity of James Evans. So, BET should be ashamed of themselves."
John Amos was and still is one of my heroes. I was a teenager when he was on Good Times and so often I wished my own father was more like James Evans. He (James Evans) was strong, he was vulnerable. He was big hearted, intelligent and most of all he left no doubt he loved his children dearly. While we all appreciate what a ground breaking show Good Times was for television and its appeal to the Black audience, the Evans family transcended race by providing positive role models for young people of all colors. I am a middle aged white man who still carries many lessons learned about being a man, a good man, from James Evans. What were the powers that be at BET thinking when they nixed John Amos?
Over the years I have been sadden with the demise of quality shows on BET. In a time when men of African descent are seen as dead beat dads, crminals, glorified gangsters, and lazy, the character of James Evans personified a strong Black man who did not leave his family when he wasn able to always pay bills. He stayed and did what he could as a MAN. ANd on a more humerous note, I always found Mr. Amos sexzee as hell too; strong African features ( he wore the hell out those pants on Good Times), un yielding, and an appreciation for the Black culture. No one else could have played an older Kunte Kinte with such dignity. It so sad that even within our Black community there tends to be a lack of respect for elders who have paved the way for others. |
